Shoulder

The shoulder is a ball-and-socket joint that enables people to perform a variety of movements as it is the most flexible joint in the body. Some of these movements include reaching the back, rotating and moving the upper arm. Considered as one of the most complex joints, the shoulder is made up of joints, muscles and tendons that connect the upper arm to the torso. Specifically, the shoulder consists of three bones: the clavicle (collarbone), scapula (shoulder blade) and the humerus (upper arm bone). Made up of the acromioclavicular and glenohumeral joint, this allows the shoulder a wide range of motion.

What Are the Most Common Shoulder Conditions?

Some of the most common shoulder conditions in Bangladesh include:

Dislocated shoulder – This condition occurs when the upper arm bone pops out of the shoulder socket.
Shoulder tendonitis – Characterised by the inflammation of the rotator cuff or the biceps tendon, shoulder tendonitis usually happens to athletes who engage in sports that involve repeatedly moving their arm over their head. There are also instances when the tendon is compressed by surrounding structures, causing it to thicken and become inflamed. When this happens, the condition is called rotator cuff tendonitis.
Frozen shoulder – Also called adhesive capsulitis, this shoulder condition develops when the shoulder capsule thickens and tightens, which results in restricted shoulder movements. Lack of usage and inflammation of the tissues surrounding the shoulder joint are pinpointed as major causes of this condition.
Shoulder impingement – This occurs when the top outer edge of the shoulder blade, also known as the acromion, rubs against or pinches the rotator cuff beneath it, causing pain and irritation. Shoulder impingement is sometimes called a swimmer’s shoulder because it commonly affects swimmers. However, anyone who engages in activities that involve the frequent use of the shoulder joints is susceptible to developing this condition.

What Are the Common Symptoms of Shoulder Conditions?

Symptoms vary depending on the type of condition and its severity. Some injuries and illnesses can be managed without surgery, but more serious ones may require shoulder surgery in Bangladesh. Common symptoms to look out for include:

  • Pain in the shoulder joints
  • Pain around the area of the back and front of the shoulder, or upper arm
  • Difficulty moving or limited movements
  • Weakness of stiffness of the shoulder or upper arm
  • Loose shoulder
  • Deformed shoulder

What Are the Causes and Risk Factors of Shoulder Conditions?

There are various risk factors that can increase one’s risk of developing shoulder problems. Some of these risks are modifiable, which means that they can be avoided, while others are not. Common causes and risk factors of shoulder problems include:

  • Daily activities and sports that entail repetitive motion and constant use of the shoulders
  • Accidents, hard falls or direct blows
  • Inflamed bursa – Bursa between the rotator cuff tendon is vulnerable to inflammation due to repetitive motions.
  • Osteoarthritis – This is when the cartilage in the shoulders starts to wear down naturally over time.
  • Rheumatoid arthritis – This is a condition in which the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks the healthy shoulder joint.
  • Injuries and sprains
